Oaxaca is magical, it’s infused with the pulse of life. Nestled in a fertile valley at 5,085 feet above sea level, Oaxaca is also the most ethnically and linguistically diverse state in México. It is the birthplace of the first indigenous president of México: Benito Juarez which gives the city it’s surname Oaxaca de Juarez.

This retreat is designed to have a balance of solo time and group time, as well as down time and out-in-the-world time. We honor the need for rest as well as activity and connection.

Some of the activities we will enjoy together include intention setting, lunar guidance workshops, learning transformational tools for self-study, daily lunar yoga, free time in the city center, a guided tour of the beautiful and culturally vibrant communities surrounding Oaxaca City, and sharing incredibly delicious meals.

“After this retreat I feel connected, inspired, vibrant and full of reverence for time spent in community with women. Such potent medicine.”

MEALS

“Oh my Lord! The freshness, the different unusual flavors and greens! So many choices available for people with different diet requests. The food was made with love and presented so beautifully. The ingredients and manner of cooking was explained to us at each meal. I love to cook and appreciated this!”

Oaxaca is the gourmet heart of México!

Mexican cuisine is on UNESCO’s cultural heritage of Humanity list for its ancestral richness, diversity of flavors, quality ingredients, and overall delectability - and Oaxaca is arguably the best of the best!

Our nourishing daily breakfasts and dinners will be prepared with love by a local chef from locally-sourced, traditional, organic ingredients. You will have the option to prepare lunch for yourself in our shared kitchen or eat out at one of the hundreds of world-class eateries awaiting within walking distance from our retreat center.

If you’ve been to Oaxaca then you know the deep nourishment and variety that comes from the artisanal ingredients and ancestral dishes. Oaxacan food is so delicious and nutritious with a variety of vegetarian and meat options available. Most dietary needs can be accommodated with advanced notice.

Marcela and Elisa, hearts of gold!

Our phenomenal chef, Elisa Castillo Morga and her support team, Marcela Bravo, are a part of a women’s food cooperative and are deeply involved in women’s empowerment movements and the movement to eat locally in Oaxaca. Elisa sources local, organic ingredients and cooks with consciousness and love, priding herself on rescuing ancestral recipes from the grandmothers. Elisa and Marcela are essential members of our retreat community.

YOUR RETREAT FACILITATORS

Sita Rosalie Davis began facilitating cross-cultural and personal growth experiences internationally over two decades ago while working for an international youth leadership organization, and since then she has humbly and joyously devoted her life to education, healing, and facilitation. She has lived, studied, and traveled extensively throughout México lindo y querido over the past 25 years and is thrilled to lead this retreat in its second incarnation.

Sita is a Certified Yoga Therapist with over 1000 hours of training through Niroga Institute and Dharma Inc in Berkeley, Oakland, and Thailand. Born in India and raised in the Bay Area, California, Sita has been practicing yoga regularly for the past 20 years and intermittently since childhood. This is her 12th year of teaching. Sita’s earliest teachers were her parents, who spent the months before and after her birth studying with TKV Desikachar in Chennai, India.

Sita collaborates and translates the New Moon Calendar Journal, created by her dear friend April McMurtry (who we will miss so much this summer!), and uses it as a transformational tool in moon circles and with Yoga Therapy and Lunar Coaching clients. The creative practices that were born from her collaboration with April over the past two decades will be the foundation for the workshops in this retreat.

Sita has a deep love of holding space for creativity, connection, and cyclical awareness and can’t wait to share these practices with you in beautiful Oaxaca.

We are lucky to have the wonderful Mareni Orduña as a part of the support team. Born and raised in Cuernavaca, Mexico, Mareni is a bilingual and bicultural mindfulness meditation and a 500-hour YTT-certified yoga instructor, Spanish-English interpreter and trained facilitator through THE MOON IS MY CALENDAR. She holds a BS in world cultures and dance from San Francisco State University.

Mareni migrated to the USA 20 years ago and since then has lived and traveled extensively around the world from New Orleans to the Middle East, learning and sharing her passion for world dances and mind-body awareness. Ultimately, her journey to self-discovery led her back to Mexico to learn and practice ancestral Mesoamerican healing traditions, following the legacy of her abuelas. She now spends her time between California and Mexico, hiking, cooking, exercising, traveling, making herbal remedies and natural skin care products, and studying flamenco dance and music.

Mareni is a long-time practitioner with the New Moon Calendar Journal and has supported the distribution of the version in Spanish since its first edition in 2019. Her deep connection to Oaxaca comes through her maternal grandfather, originally from this beautiful and culturally rich region. Mareni can’t wait to bring her warmth and spontaneity to our group and share Oaxaca’s culture and beauty with you!

Why the moon? Lunar wisdom honors all the phases of inner and outer cycles, and shows us how to trust the process. The moon teaches us to replenish our radiance, attune to natural rhythms, witness with receptivity, and flow with change in order to support personal and collective transformation.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is this retreat only for women? Yes, we welcome women of all backgrounds and stages of life. We are a multigenerational international group and we love having sisters and mother-daughter pairs for this New Moon in Cancer!

How do I get to Oaxaca? One option is to fly to Mexico City and then take a 1hr flight to Oaxaca de Juarez Xoxocotlán International Airport (airport code: OAX or MMOX). I suggest the Aeroméxico flights to Oaxaca with a layover in Mexico City. Some airlines like American Airlines fly to Oaxaca de Juarez direct from Dallas. Check online to see where to get the best rates, you are in charge of coordinating your travel.

I don’t speak Spanish, am I going to be able to communicate with people in Oaxaca? Many people do speak English and your retreat guides speak Spanish fluently and are happy to support with translation.

Will there be organized activities during free time activities? We will schedule several group activities that will be included in the retreat fee, including a tour of the Valle Central de Oaxaca, a cultural immersion art class, and a Kinam class. Otherwise, the afternoon time is generally for you to decide what you’d like to do. We are happy to make suggestions and get you familiar with navigating the city. You are also welcome to make plans with other guests at the retreat, or just rest at our site.

Is it okay if I haven’t used the New Moon Calendar Journal yet? If you are excited to deepen your personal practice and connect with the lunar cycle, then yes - this retreat will support you at any level of experience with the New Moon Calendar and Journal.

Is this retreat only for people who have a menstrual cycle? No, connecting with the moon is for everybody regardless of whether you bleed or not. We will touch on the inner cycle and seasons of menstruation - however, this is not the primary focus.

I am deeply called to attend, but I don’t have the financial resources to pay the full amount right now. There is an option for a payment plan, please contact Sita for more info. We’d love to make this work for you to join us.

What if this retreat fills up before I register, will you be holding another one in the near future? There are always plans in the works for other retreats, so stay tuned!
